Our Story

In 2016, Charlotte experienced civil unrest with violent riots. This event occurred after an officer involved shooting which led to the death of Keith Lamont Scott.

This event impacted our community greatly. After this event, the Chief of Police was committed to continuing to build stronger community relationships. The Chief of Police recognized the importance of communities working together with law enforcement. Numerous conversations began with the community officers and community leaders within the CMPD-Freedom Division.

In late 2016, the FDAC was formed with the Chief of Police's vision of facilitating maximum cooperation and communication between the police division and the communities they serve.

The FDAC started out with approximately 7 members that represented different communities within the CMPD- Freedom Division. In 2019, the FDAC grew to approximately 40 active members and  2021 we have nearly 50 active members that represents numerous communities and businesses.

As the membership continued to grow, the FDAC found the need to have an acting board of directors to continue the mission. In 2019, the FDAC became an incorporated organization and this year we achieved our goal to operate as a 501c3 non-profit organization. If you are a resident or business in one of our communities, we encourage you to be a part of the Freedom Division Advisory Council (FDAC).

Who we are

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) recognizes that it alone cannot provide public safety. Public safety emanates from the service of many public agencies, CMPD, the active involvement of community residents, churches, and businesses.

The Freedom Division Advisory Council (FDAC) is a group of community members that represent residential and business communities within the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Freedom Division. The FDAC members volunteer their time to be an active leader, communicator and advocate for our communities.

Each of our members decisions and actions are guided by mutual values of: Trust, Inclusion, Accountability, and Respect.

The FDAC works in partnership with the CMPD-Freedom Division to identify community problems, help to analyze their causes, develop methods for resolving problems, implement programs to alleviate the problems and promote awareness of police policies and responsibilities within each of the communities represented by the FDAC.
